Brody’s notebook

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17

Brody Speaks uh, nope

A Journey to the Center of My Mind and one more time, nope

Once again on Thursday night, after cross-country practice, I embraced my willingness to be a Peeping Tom. I needed to be certain that I’m Danny’s one and only stalker, and that Jared the thug fry cook is ancient history.

Plus I was hungry. It was well past five o’clock, and I’d missed dinner with Mom and Dad. A guy needs to eat, even if I mostly eat vegetables.

So after I dropped Henry off at home, I drove straight to the Food Pyramid where Danny works most afternoons. And lo and freaking behold, who was sitting on the pretty yellow bench beside the restaurant’s entrance, but Jared himself?

I didn’t want to jump to conclusions—Jared could have been there to talk to the manager about creative fry-cooking techniques or to pick up his paycheck so he could buy booze for another underage guy. Just because his faded-denim-clad backside was resting casually on the dang bench didn’t mean he was necessarily there to harass or attempt to steal my boyfriend. I parked the Jeep in a far corner of the lot and then turned all the way around in my seat and craned my neck to the extreme left so I could do my very best job of covert observation. And by that I mean stalking.

My efforts paid off quickly. I watched for only about five minutes, and then Danny came out of the restaurant. He looked younger and more innocent than usual, thanks to the fact that he’s not allowed to wear black clothing to work. In fact, from the neck down, he resembled a slim Catholic schoolboy in a red polo shirt, snug khaki pants, and clean white running sneakers. From the neck up, his image still screamed emo gay boy! Merely having his shoulder-length hair pulled back into a ponytail couldn’t completely alter the radical effect of his very-pierced personal style.

I admit that I tensed up when he walked straight over to Jared. I’m not sure why I felt sudden stress. Either I was worried that Jared was going to try to hurt Danny or I experienced a brewing jealousy that one of my guys was fraternizing with his ex.

But he didn’t sit down beside Jared on the sunny yellow bench. Danny put his hands on his hips, he bent forward a little bit, and from what I could see at a distance, he lowered his eyebrows. Familiar with Danny’s body language, I could safely assume that he and Jared were not going to have a conversation about which park they’d be going to after work to collect pretty fall leaves.

Jared immediately took a familiar defensive position, marked by the way he crossed his arms in front of his chest. And for the next five minutes, Danny tore him a new one. That was probably as clear to the diners who passed by as it was to me, Brody the Spy, who strained to peek at them from an obstructed view about eight cars away.
